Ingredients
- 4 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1/2 (16-ounce) loaf day-old French bread, torn into small pieces
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 16 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
- 10 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/3 cup white wine
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 3 green onions, chopped, plus more, to taste, for garnish
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
Directions
Step 1 -Place the sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until it is browned. Drain the excess grease, and set it aside.
Step 2 -Spread the torn bread pieces on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Step 3 -Drizzle the melted butter over the bread pieces, then sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread.
Step 4 -Cover with the shredded cheese.
Step 5 -In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, the milk, the white wine, the Dijon mustard, and 3 of the chopped green onions.
Step 6 -Season with the black pepper and the red pepper flakes.
Step 7 -Pour the egg mixture over all of the ingredients in the baking dish.
Step 8 -Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to overnight.
Step 9 -Remove the dish from the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to baking to allow it to come to room temperature.
Step 10 -Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
Step 11 -Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake, about 30 minutes.
Step 12 -Uncover and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
Step 13 -Remove from the oven and then spread the sour cream evenly over the top.
Step 14 -Sprinkle the parmesan cheese on top of the sour cream layer.
Step 15 -Return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is starting to brown slightly.
Step 16 -Serve garnished with the extra chopped green onions.
